AIOU New Assignment Submission Rules Autumn 2026: What Every AD and BA Student Must Know
AIOU New Assignment Submission Rules Autumn 2026
If you are an Associate Degree or BA Open Courses student at Allama Iqbal Open University, the way you submit assignments has changed. Under the new AIOU assignment submission rules for Autumn 2026, you must now submit your assignments online through the Aaghi LMS portal. Postal submission is finished, and giving your assignment to your tutor by hand is no longer allowed for these programs.
The change was announced on 20 October 2026 through an official university notification. It affects both new and continuing students. If this is your program, read this guide carefully, because an assignment sent the old way may not be accepted at all.

What Exactly Changed
For years, Associate Degree and BA students prepared their assignments on paper and either posted them to their tutor by registered mail or handed them over in person. That system is now over for these programs.
From Autumn 2026, the only accepted method is an online upload. You prepare your assignment, convert it into a PDF file, log in to the Aaghi LMS portal, and upload it against the correct course and assignment number. AIOU has clearly said it will no longer accept assignments sent by post, and tutors have been told not to accept assignments handed to them directly.
Which Students Are Affected by the New Rules
The notification names three groups:
- Associate Degree in Arts (this includes the old BA program)
- Associate Degree in Commerce (this includes the old B.Com program)
- BA Open Courses students
Both new admissions and continuing students in these programs are covered. Reports so far do not say this change applies to every AIOU program, so if you are in Matric, FA, BS, B.Ed or any other program, follow the instructions given for your own program. When in doubt, check your LMS account or your regional office.
What Has Not Changed
The old method still applies where the university says so:
- SSC and HSSC (Matric and FA) students continue to submit their assignments to their tutors, as the official AIOU guidance confirms.
- BS, B.Ed, MA and MSc ODL students were already uploading assignments through Aaghi LMS. Nothing new for them.
The university’s official assignment instructions for online (ODL) students also remain important: upload your typed work in Word or PDF format, do not upload scanned copies of handwritten English assignments (students writing in Urdu or Arabic may upload a scanned handwritten PDF, and the file must not be larger than 5 MB), and remember that late assignments cannot be uploaded at all once the deadline passes.
How to Submit Your Assignment Online: The Short Version
The full step-by-step method is covered in our separate Aaghi LMS upload guide. The short version:
- Prepare your assignment and convert it into a clear, readable PDF. Check that every page is complete and in the right order.
- Log in to the Aaghi LMS portal at aaghi.aiou.edu.pk with your student credentials.
- Open your course, go to the Assignments section, and choose the correct assignment number.
- Upload the PDF file, submit it, and take a screenshot of the success message as proof.
Deadlines Matter More Than Ever Now
With postal submission, a late post at least had a chance. With the LMS, the door simply closes. The portal does not accept uploads after the last date, so waiting for the final day is a real risk, especially since the portal often slows down on deadline day.
For Autumn 2026, the full-credit assignment deadlines we confirmed in our schedule guide are 15 December 2026, 8 January 2027, 30 January 2027, and 20 February 2027. Always verify your own program’s exact dates against your question paper or your LMS account, and plan to upload at least two or three days early.
Mistakes That Can Cost You Marks
- Uploading on the last day: slow portal, failed uploads, no second chance.
- Wrong file: a blurry scan, missing pages, or a file that is not a PDF can fail or confuse the checker.
- Wrong course or assignment number: your work lands in the wrong place and is marked as missing.
- Copied work: AIOU’s plagiarism policy is strict. Plagiarism or hired ghost writers can get a student debarred from the degree. Always write in your own words.
A Note on Academic Honesty
Treat solved samples and guides as learning material only. Read them, understand the method, then write your own answers in your own words. Copying a solved assignment word for word is exactly what the university’s plagiarism policy punishes, and the penalty can end your degree.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still send my AIOU assignment by registered post?
No. For Associate Degree (Arts/Commerce) and BA Open Courses students, AIOU has stopped accepting postal submissions from Autumn 2026. Only the LMS upload counts.
Can I give my assignment directly to my tutor?
Not for these programs. The university has banned in-person submission to tutors for AD and BA Open Courses students. Tutors in these programs will not accept hand-delivered assignments.
Does the new rule apply to continuing students too?
Yes. The notification covers both new and continuing students in the affected programs.
Should I type my assignment or write it by hand?
Reports say students may write by hand or type and then convert to PDF. However, the university’s official ODL instruction says typed Word or PDF uploads are the standard, and scanned handwritten assignments are not acceptable except for Urdu or Arabic medium students (PDF, maximum 5 MB). Follow the instructions printed on your own question paper, and when in doubt, type it.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
The LMS does not accept late uploads. Your assignment will not be submitted, and its marks will be zero. Upload early.
Does this rule apply to Matric or FA students?
No. SSC and HSSC students still submit their assignments to their tutors. If your program is not named in the notification, follow your own program’s instructions.
Final Word
This is one of the biggest process changes AIOU has made in years, and thousands of students will only learn about it when their posted assignments come back unaccepted. If you are in an Associate Degree or BA Open Courses program, move your workflow online now: prepare your PDFs early, learn the LMS upload steps, and keep screenshots of every submission.
